TUSCALOOSA, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley underwent a minor hernia repair surgery Tuesday morning in Tuscaloosa, according to his office.

The hernia was detected at an early stage of development and the governor decided to have the repair procedure now ahead of an upcoming economic development trip to Japan.

The governor's office says the procedure was an outpatient surgery that was performed laparoscopically and called the procedure a "success".

The governor's office says the procedure has curtailed Bentley's immediate travel schedule, but he is expected to resume a working schedule within 24 hours.

The governor is recovering in Tuscaloosa, where he is from, and is expected to return to Montgomery in the coming days.
