MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University Student Government Association President Sharod Campbell has a message for ASU students: stay calm and carry on with your studies.

The message came in a statement from Campbell about the 36-page preliminary report on finances at the university released by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley Monday.

"It is imperative that we understand that this is only a preliminary update and that we only react off of facts that are presented as evidence," Campbell said in the statement. "As the student government President any information that I receive will review with my executive staff and then inform the students."

WSFA 12 News talked to two ASU alumni Tuesday who said they think the findings in the audit could be the key to getting the university back on track. They hope the university can get any hint of wrongdoing out of the way so the school can focus on educating students.

Jay C. Coleman and Tom Simon graduated years ago but still stay informed on the university.

They've both been waiting for the forensic audit to be released and say they have long suspected financial wrongdoings on the part of the school's leadership.

The university and those implicated in the audit have denied any misconduct, but Coleman had strong words for the accused.

"The people that these allegations are made against that came out in the preliminary audit findings, I think that they need to step down. They need to step back and release Alabama State from all this negative publicity and all this negative attention and go on and fight your battles and if you did nothing wrong, then that's on you," Coleman said. "But release Alabama State because right now they are holding Alabama State hostage. Alabama State is a beautiful place, we love Alabama State University. It's just a few individuals who refuse to step aside and continue to allow Alabama State to be dragged into this mess."

One of the men we talked with believes the initial findings in the preliminary report are only the tip of the iceberg.
