Spring Hill student killed, others injured in Maury Co. crash

Kane Ragsdale Kane Ragsdale
COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

A 10th grader at Spring Hill High School was killed Tuesday night after a crash in Maury County.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. on Mt. Olivet Road and Compton Lane in Columbia.

Tennessee Highway Patrol officials say Kane Ragsdale was riding in a Nissan with two other boys when the 17-year-old driver crossed the center lane and slammed head-on into a pickup truck.

Ragsdale, 15, was the front passenger and died at the scene.

The driver and another passenger in the Nissan were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Both have since been discharged from the hospital.

The 28-year-old driver of the pickup truck was taken to a nearby hospital.

According to the THP report, speed was a factor and Kane was not wearing a seat belt.

Hundreds of Kane's friends took to Twitter, spreading the word to wear white for Kane, and a group of 70 gathered at school for a morning vigil.

The accident is also bringing up old concerns about speeding on Mt. Olivet Road. Several neighbors up and down the street have said speeding has been a problem there for years.

Kristen Allen is friends with all three teens involved and said she had an accident on the very same stretch of road.

"Everybody speeds down it. That was why I wrecked," she said.

According to the preliminary accident report, the Nissan's driver, 17-year-old Devin Meksayo was cited. and criminal charges are pending.
