ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) -

An inmate at the Elmore Correctional Facility died from injuries suffered during an altercation with another inmate Tuesday, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Derrick Dennis, 34, was transported to Jackson Hospital in Montgomery where he died just before 3 p.m. Tuesday. He was serving a life sentence for rape, assault and burglary out of Jefferson County.

Inmate Christopher Smith, 29, has been identified as a suspect in the homicide. He's serving a 25-year sentence for trafficking, possession of a controlled substance and receiving stolen property.

ADOC officials say the circumstances around Dennis' death are  under investigation. An autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death.

The Equal Justice Initiative recently conducted an investigation into allegations of abuse of inmates at the Elmore Correctional Facility. Bryan Stevenson with EJI says his concern all along has been that if violence exists at the staff level, it will be carried out on the inmate level.

Stevenson says EJI is currently looking at their records to see if they have had any contact with either the victim or the suspect in this case. They will be investigating the death as well.
