BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

A Beaufort County woman says she's lucky to be alive after a chainsaw fell on her and cut her back and shoulder.

Meredith Irion was on the roof with her yard guy using a chainsaw to cut limbs from a tree in her back yard when she felt something fall on her shoulder. She thought it was a tree limb, until she saw the blood and felt her bone pop out of her back.

"I was like, 'What happened?' I don't think we'd been up there five minuets and it happened," she said. "The young man that was helping me, he started screaming. I could hear the blood gushing out. So, I was just trying to hold pressure on it."

It was up to her to find a way off the roof, because, according to Irion, the man panicked.

"I walked from the corner over to here," she said, pointing at the deck of her porch, "And sat down right there."

Somehow she managed to climbed down, and ran over to her neighbor's house. They called 911.

Luckily, the blade didn't hit her bone. She doesn't have full use of her right arm, but it coud have been worse, she said.

"Doctors say if it had been two inches one way it would have been my artery, or if it had been an inch to the back it would have been my spinal cord and I would have been paralyzed," she said.

Surrounded by friends and family members, irion has a new perspective.

"I'm thankful to be alive," she said.

Now she has medical bills pilling up. She just started a new job, and she hasn't earned enough sick or vacation time, so she's not getting paid for the time she's out of work.

Her friends have set up a fund on gofundme.com to help her. This is the link to her page, if you would like to donate: http://www.gofundme.com/4skm70. The name of her page is "Go Team Mimi."

People have already donated more than $1,500 to her.

Irion says she's grateful for the love and support she's received. But most importantly, she's happy to still be here for her daughter and son.
