CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Agents have made one of the largest crystal methamphetamine busts in southwest Ohio history, according to federal law enforcement officials.

Drug Enforcement Agency investigators arrested five people and seized approximately 16 pounds of meth with a street value of about $1.6 million.

According to a law enforcement source and court documents obtained by FOX19, the drugs were a super-pure form of crystal meth, known as "Ice."

Court documents further allege one of the defendants used his girlfriend and an infant as cover to help transport the drugs.

According to a grand jury indictment, the drug trafficking conspiracy began in July with the intent to transport meth from the southwest part of the country into the Cincinnati area for sale and distribution.

On September 27, the indictment reads one of the defendants brought the drugs into Ohio, using his girlfriend and child as cover in the car and then took a room at the Quality Inn in Sharonville. The defendants then allegedly met the intended buyer at the motel.

The indictment states one of the defendants allegedly had a backpack and bag, containing approximately 16 pounds meth, as well as a cooler in which the drugs had been brought into Ohio.

A short time later, according to a law enforcement source, agents arrested the suspects on I-75 northbound near the I-275 interchange.

Court documents also allege one of the defendants told investigators he had connections to drug cartels in Mexico, he could access large quantities of cocaine for DEA agents and had also been present during a cash transfer of approximately $11 million dollars at the U.S.- Mexico border.

Heriberto Albarran Caro, Bernardo Olivares-Cepeda, Jose Ayvar-Ramos, Alberto Sanchez and Ivan De Los Santos have all been indicted for drug trafficking conspiracy in connection with the September meth seizure.

Four are Mexican nationals, Olivares-Cepeda is a naturalized U.S. citizen. All remain in federal custody.  A trial date has been set for December.
