Driver's alcohol content nearly 4 times legal limit at time of crash

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The driver in a deadly one-car crash on Interstate 10 that also severely maimed one person was driving with a blood-alcohol content nearly four times the legal limit, according to a court document.

Edwin Hurt, 34, of Phoenix, was driving a luxury car that rolled and struck a tree and wall near 83rd Avenue about 10:20 p.m. Sunday, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A front-seat passenger died after suffering a severe head injury, and a passenger in the back seat had an arm amputated, skull and rib fractures and a punctured lung, the document said.

Hurt was reportedly trapped behind the steering wheel of the car with a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, according to the document.

Hurt was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was arrested Thursday. A lab analysis of his blood showed his blood-alcohol level at 0.317 percent, according to the document. The state's legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

Hurt potentially faces multiple charges, extreme DUI and manslaughter among them.

DPS officers said Xanax pills were also found in the vehicle, but Hurt did not have a prescription for the drug, according to the document.

Officers said that the vehicle belonged to Hurt, but no title was found.

Hurt also posted pictures on Facebook of him and the victims at a restaurant that showed them drinking prior to the crash, according to the court document.

Hurt has a prior record that includes a previous DUI, drugs, assault and contempt of court.

He was taken to the Four Avenue Jail upon release from the hospital. His bond was set at $150,000.
