PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ (CBS5) -
Two men hunting for quail last Thursday in Prescott Valley were injured after being attacked by a bobcat that later tested positive for rabies.
The adult male bobcat darted underneath the men's vehicle when they stopped to open a gate, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
"The bobcat was spotted under some bushes and then ran under the vehicle," said department spokesman Zen Mocarski. "One of the victims looked under the truck and was attacked."
The attack happened several miles northeast of Prescott Valley near the Mingus Meadows and Coyote Springs subdivisions.
The initial victim of the attack was treated for deep lacerations, punctures and scratches to his back, shoulders, arms and chest.
The second victim tried to get the bobcat off his friend when he was attacked as well. He suffered injuries to his arms and legs.
One of the men was able to shoot and kill the bobcat. They then took it and themselves to Yavapai Regional Medical Center.
It is the second confirmed rabid wild animal attack in Yavapai County in 2013.
A 14-year-old girl in Sedona was bitten by a rabid fox in January.
