GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
One man was shot and killed and the suspected shooter was questioned by police and later released after a party in Glendale turned violent, officers said.
Police got a call about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 20, after gunfire rang out in the area of 4900 West Townley.
When officers arrived, they found 27-year-old Manuel Loreto wounded by gunfire. He was rushed to a local hospital and died on Oct. 24 from his injuries.
Police took into custody the suspected shooter, 39-year-old James Rakes, who had remained at the scene.
Officers said their investigation revealed people at the party had begun arguing. Loreto was asked to leave but returned a short time later with a rifle and began firing shots outside the home, according to Glendale police Officer Tracey Breeden.
At some point, witnesses said Loreto pointed the rifle at partygoers and Rakes took out a gun and shot Loreto. Detectives said Rakes fired his handgun once during the incident they believe may have been self-defense. Rakes cooperated with detectives. He was later released.
The report is being submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review on possible charges in the case.
