BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has arrested a 40-year-old man accused of breaking into a home and beating his mother-in-law with a baseball bat.
Investigators charged James Robert Workman with first-degree burglary and attempted murder.
According to the sheriff's office, Workman was located by deputies in the area of the restrooms at South Beach at Hunting Island State Park Sunday afternoon, after his abandoned vehicle was located on Porpoise Drive.
Workman's arrest stems from a Saturday night incident when deputies responded to a home on Fairway Club Drive on Fripp Island in reference to a reported assault.
When authorities arrived, they found the 68-year-old victim suffering from a head injury. The victim said Workman, her son-in-law, had come into her home yelling and cursing at her.
According to the victim, Workman then struck her several times in the head with a baseball bat.
Investigators say a 16-year-old girl, who was staying at the home, attempted to pull Workman away from the victim. Authorities say Workman then left the area in his vehicle.
Fripp Island security officers say they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Workman's vehicle, but Workman refused.
The victim was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The sheriff's office says her condition remains undisclosed.
