Tax renewals passed, but with very few total votes

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Saturday's election saw two 10 year tax renewals approved by the voters. It's just the amount of the voters that concerns Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler.

Unofficial results show that less than seven percent of voters turned out for the election.

"It costs roughly $1,200 to $1,250 per precinct to run an election. Wether zero shows up or 2,000 show up, the cost is the same and I think that's a strong message to the voters," said Schedler on Monday.

The Sheriff's millage passed with 6.3 percent of registered voters casting a ballot and the EMS tax passed with 6.2 percent.

"I have not yet found the answer to this voter participation issue I mean it's all over the board and it seems to be getting worse," mused Schedler.

"I think its voter apathy in general. Frustration especially at the federal level is what we're seeing. And I really believe to a certain degree if you look at this past weekend at the congressional election, not in play in east baton rouge, here we are electing a new congressman and we have 21 percent voter participation to send someone to congress to maybe straighten that mess out," says Schedler.

Governor Bobby Jindal also looked towards the Nation's Capitol when asked about the low turnout. "In the last couple of weeks there has been a lot of coverage about what's going on in Washington D.C., a lot of frustration in our government; the dysfunction in D.C. Maybe that had something to do with it. I know there were a lot of local issues and different decisions and different conditions in every community, but it may have been that people are frustrated with the folks in D.C. and decided to stay home." Jindal said.
