MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Investigators found an infant dead near a dumpster behind businesses in the Wolfchase area, according to Bartlett city officials.

A husband and wife, who were staying at a nearby hotel, went for a jog Saturday morning when they saw the infant's body at Germantown Road and Highway 64. The couple immediately notified police about a suspicious death.

"I can't even fathom what would make somebody do something like that," said business owner Robert Fisher.

Business owners at the Shops of Wolf Lake are horrified police located a newborn in a bag by a shared dumpster behind their businesses.

"It's was just a sick feeling, so sad," said Debbie's Flowers owner Debbie Ellis.

Ellis says Bartlett police came into her business Saturday morning and started asking her questions.

"They asked me if I had seen a bag in the alleyway back there. Of course [I] didn't, and they wouldn't tell me what was going on," said Ellis.

Business owners in the area say police spent time at Gus's Fried Chicken. They say the business was closed for about an hour, but no one at Gus's would comment about the incident.

"It's just heartbreaking to know there are safe houses and there are people that would love. I don't understand, but it was very, very, very sad," said Ellis.

The cause of death is still unknown, and investigators are still waiting on results from the medical examiner.

Authorities still do not have any suspects in custody, but they have identified and contacted the mother of the child.
