ROSELAND, LA (WAFB) -

A Roseland woman has been sentenced to six months in jail after her pit bull attacked an 8 year old girl.

Two pit bulls, one owned by Natalie Newton, 21, viciously attacked Mikayja Oliver as she and a friend were playing near Newton's home in April 2012.

Mikayja's friend, Desiree Mitchell, testified that she tried to pull the dogs off Mikayja before running for help.  She also said that the doors in Newton's home were open on the day of the attack and that neither dog was on a leash.

Mikayja had to undergo several surgeries after the attack.

Newton was found guilty of negligent injuring after a two and a half hour trial.

Bridgette Harper, who owned the other dog involved in the attack, pled no contest in August and was also sentenced to six months in jail.
