KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Two area schools had scares Wednesday after either reports of gunshots or a gun in close proximity.

Police said Central Academy of Excellence was temporarily placed on lockdown after a person with a gun was spotted near the school.

The school, located at 3221 Indiana Ave., was locked down about 2:40 p.m.

School officials said the person with the gun was never on the school's property. A man was walking to his vehicle with a gun when an alarmed neighbor saw him and contacted authorities.

Police said the man involved was taken into custody for questioning.

Separately, a crowd of former students gathered outside the high school and a verbal dispute broke out. Police responded and no punches were thrown.

Students were dismissed and left without incident once classes ended.

About 3:30 p.m., the Belton School District said students at Scott Elementary were kept in the building while police investigated a report of possible gunshots.

The school is located at 310 S Scott Ave in Belton, MO.

Belton police arrived and searched the area. After investigating, officers said the area was safe and students were allowed to go home.

About 5:30 p.m., the Belton School District said police didn't find evidence that a gun was fired near the school and they instead believe someone heard fireworks instead.
