Teacher resigns, inappropriate contact with students investigation underway

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A local teacher has resigned from her position and now an investigation is underway to see whether she may have had inappropriate contact with her students.

According to sources, children and family services are looking into the teacher. Police are stopping short of saying they are investigating, but it seems officials across the board are trying to figure out if a teacher got too close to some students.

"I entered her room and it was completely empty," said student Mayra Zepeda.

The abrupt departure of a JC Harmon High School teacher has students asking questions and police looking into allegations of inappropriate behavior between the teacher and students.

"I would like to know what actually happened," Zepeda said.

The teacher, who KCTV5 is not naming because she has not been charged with a crime, submitted her resignation on Wednesday at the regularly scheduled board meeting. Prior to that sources said she was suspended with pay.

Sources tell KCTV5 allegations have surfaced the teacher, who has taught at the school for 15 years, was having inappropriate relationships with students. Some of the students alleged to have been involved are former students.

Sources say the division of family services as well as school administrators and police are trying to determine if any of the relationships were sexual in nature while the teens were in fact still students.

Under Kansas law, it doesn't matter if a person is old enough to legally consent to sex - if they are a student and have a sexual relationship with a teacher then that teacher can be charged with unlawful sexual relations.

The students who have heard the rumors are surprised by the teacher at the center of the scandal.

"She a fun teacher to be around, but she's not like that. She's appropriate, she makes sure everyone is in line, it's not just her," said student Paul Garcia.

KCTV5 asked the school district if they have made parents aware of the allegations in case there are more possible victims. The district said "We thoroughly investigate any allegations of inappropriate staff behavior and communicate with parents as appropriate, while making sure to avoid compromising the results of the investigation."

The woman released a statement through her attorney James Brun saying she's been teaching for 17 years and she's decided to resign her position because she believes it's in the children's best interest as well as her own best interest.

She denies any wrongdoing.

The school is located on Steele Road in Kansas City, KS.
