Football tournament helps battle domestic violence

SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

Johnson County's only domestic abuse shelter helps more than 7,500 survivors of abuse annually, and the public got the chance to help them out Saturday.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and an event was held to help SafeHome fight the battle against such abuse.

The public joined former Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame Guard Will Shields for a day of fun and flag football on Saturday for SafeHome's 13th Annual Will Shields Red of Domestic Violence Flag Football Tournament. There was fun for the kids, too, with the seventh annual Shields Family Children's Soccer tournament.

Proceeds from both events benefit SafeHome.

Will and Senia Shields have been longtime supporters of SafeHome and the work the organization has been doing for 33 years in the metro area.

"Football and fund raising go hand in hand with raising awareness of SafeHome and its mission to help women and children in need," he said in a press release. "I hope lots of people will come out and play for a good case."

The tournaments took place at Mid-America Sports Complex, 20000 Johnson Dr. in Shawnee, KS, just off of I-435 and Johnson Drive. The football games were 35 minutes each (two 15-minute halves and five-minute break in-between) and were played on a 60-yard long field.

Registration began at 8 a.m.; games began at 9 a.m.

Tournament details:

  • Two divisions: Open (seven people teams) & Coed (eight people, with three women minimum); 16 teams per division
  • Limited to 32 teams
  • Pool play with professional referees
  • Teams guaranteed three games, championship games in each division

All players received a tournament shirt and trophies will be given to the first and second place teams.

The general public was invited to watch the games.

In addition to the flag football tourney, the sixth annual Shields Family Soccer Tournament took place the same day. It is a recreational 3 v 3 soccer tournament for teams U-7 through U-14.

Over the previous 12 years, the tournaments have raised more than $300,000 for SafeHome.

Since 1993, Shields has helped thousands of people in the Kansas City area through his Will to Succeed Foundation. Shields has been recognized for his community efforts - like the minicamp - through numerous awards including his selection as the 2003 recipient of the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, the Class of 2011 College Football Hall of Fame and as the Walter Camp Football Foundation's 2010 Man of the Year award. A recent inductee into the Chiefs Hall of Fame, these honors recognize Shields' success both on and off the field.
