Families displaced due to Henrico apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

Eight families are displaced because of an apartment fire last night.

It happened at the Nottingham Green Apartments off the 200 block of Province Road around 8:30 Friday night.

Fighting back tears Kimberly Menzies searched though what used to be clothes, furniture, and charred remains of her Michael Jackson album collection.

Menzies says the fire that ripped through her apartment on Saturday night destroyed almost everything that she owned even taking the lives of two kittens.

"Its like having my two kids going and all of this started from something so stupid," Menzies said.

Authorities say the fire started in the bottom unit in the bedroom and then it quickly spread upstairs.

"The fire was raising so it was just going to get worse and worse and I was hoping the fire department was going to get their soon so we could make sure that everything was okay."

Kimberly's son Jamal and his girlfriend Brittany had just arrived to the apartment when the fire broke out.

"I'm glad nobody is hurt but that is all their possessions from their entire lives in apartment pretty much everything is gone," Brittany Wilkerson said.

Everything gone except this a surviving album from Kim's Michael Jackson collection.

"I'm going to take it though so maybe this will be my new start," Kimberly said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There are several stories we're hearing from neighbors, but investigators won't go into confirm those at this time.

At last check all families affected have received help from the red-cross.
