Freedom through the Eyes of Bus Boycotters Comes to the G.W. Carver Interpretive Museum

"Freedom Riders and Bus Boycotters: Threads of a Story" is the first major exhibition to be housed at the G.W. Carver Interpretive Museum.  The Exhibition presents the stories of Civil Rights activists who were bold enough to stand for justice by riding buses into the segregated south, paving the way for integration, via a very unique and shocking perspective…their mug shots.

The creative work of renowned artist Charlotta Janssen, the Exhibition "features paintings from mug shots of famous and non famous people arrested during two incidents amidst the civil rights movement demanding desegregation and equal rights for all."  Each portrait, visually derived from the grainy, unadorned mug shots captured at the time of arrest, has been brought to life by Janssen with brush strokes, newspaper collage embellishments, and a simple yet powerful color combination.

As Janssen put it in her own words, "…the Freedom Riders took a hold of me. Mug shots that had preserved the reciprocity of confrontation - being confronted by injustice whilst confronting it for its injustice drew me in. Intuitively I added collage to convey a feeling for the time and the severity of the moment these images were taken, creating a context of noise and music."

As an addition to the Exhibition, there will be a meet and greet with one of the bus boycotters featured in Janssen's compelling collection.  The date and time of this event is TBD.

"Freedom Riders and Bus Boycotters: Threads of a Story" is curated by famed muralist Wes Hardin.
