Hundreds still displaced by Sandy damage

MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Tuesday marks the one year anniversary of Storm Sandy, which was one of the worst storms to ever hit Connecticut.

When the storm hit, many homes and properties were severely damaged and 12 months later, many told Eyewitness News that they don't have the money to rebuild.

"The whole house was gone like a doll house," said Joann Sabas, whose home in Milford was destroyed by Sandy.

Connecticut received $71.82 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with $30 million available to repair homes damaged by Sandy.

"We are in far better shape than we were three years ago with our ability to inform people and make them safer," said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy

Malloy announced additional $65 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will be helping the victims of Sandy.

"This additional $65 million will provide a tremendous boost to the efforts currently underway to help residents and communities that are still feeling the effects from this historic storm," said Malloy in a statement.

The funding will help with expenses not covered by insurance, officials said. The funding would help with the following:

  • Structural repair or replacement of damaged property
  • Mitigation assistance to elevate homes and/or reduce the damage from future disasters
  • Rehabilitation, modification and/or improvements to infrastructure and public facilities to address damage from the storm and to reduce the damage from future disasters.

Some homeowners in Milford told Eyewitness News that they would like to raise their homes, but they cannot afford it. Eyewitness News has learned the additional funding announced Monday should help with those improvements.
