PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 2-year-old pit bull has been reunited with her owner after recovering from a case of severe abuse at the hands of a woman who allegedly chained her to a door knob and starved her.

Ryder's owner learned of the abuse case from the media and contacted the Arizona Humane Society to tell them a person she knew had taken Ryder but expected her to return the dog, according to a post on the Phoenix Police Department's Facebook page.

A Phoenix police investigation led them to the apartment of 28-year-old Corina Martinez on Sept. 28.

Officers found the "severely emaciated" pit bull attached to the door knob of one of the bedrooms with a linked chain so tight only the dog's hind feet could reach the floor. The dog's head was bent to its chest and it had urinated on itself and the floor. The dog also did not have access to water, officers said.

The dog was severely malnourished, weighing only 28 pounds, and was taken to the Arizona Humane Society for treatment. He had more than doubled his weight while at the Human Society.

Ryder and her owner were reunited Tuesday after weeks of care, according to the Facebook post.

"The reunion was quite emotional for the owner, the AZHS employees and, based on her reaction to seeing and recognizing her owner, also for Ryder! Alas, there was not enough tissue to go around," the post reads.

Police and the dog's owner have worked together as the case moves to prosecution, according to police.

Martinez, was arrested and booked for felony animal cruelty. Detectives said Martinez's live-in boyfriend may also face charges.
