LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Waverly Hills Sanatorium is known worldwide as a place where there's a lot of paranormal activity.

Charlie Mattingly and his wife Tina have owned Waverly since 2001. A skeptic himself, it wasn't long before he changed his mind. One night he said he started chasing what he believed was a trespasser in the building, "And then we came out after them and there was no one there."

Stories like Mattingly's are common at Waverly. Some believe it's because of amount of tuberculosis deaths that happened during its decades as a hospital.

"So you're talking somewhere around the 18,000 to 20,000 (people) that actually died here and when you think about that much death in one place how could there not be some type of residual spirit of some sort left by somebody, someone who was here before," said Mattingly.

Paranormal investigators come to Waverly by the hundreds to find evidence of life after death and some think they've come away with proof. The fifth floor is particularly of interest because a nurse reportedly hung herself there after self aborting her baby.

Mattingly said, "When we have an overnight here where they're investigating, especially if there's a woman who's pregnant they always get very queasy and don't feel well and need to come down off the roof."

Another popular haunt at Waverly is the old body chute where the dead were transported discretely out of the building to waiting rail cars and hearses at the bottom of the hill.

"When we show people the proof or some of the photographs we have up here or some of the videos we have up here, people will still pick it apart and say 'ahhh that's not paranormal.' Well ok, but why does it happen here so much? Explain that one!" Mattingly said.

There are thousands of stories that have come out of Waverly Hills of paranormal activity. Are they true or just legends? I guess we'll all have to wait until it's our time to go to find out for sure.
