CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Cincinnati Fire Department honored a fallen Kentucky firefighter Tuesday who died from injuries he received while attempting to rescue his neighbors from a blaze.

Lt. Arlie "Pooh" Hill III, from the Whitley Fire Department, passed away on Sunday at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Hill, 37, suffered second and third degree burns over 90 percent of his body after responding to a fire on August 30. Hill was not on duty at the time.

He and his brother-in-law, fellow Whitley Fire Lieutenant Adam Stephens, rushed into their neighbor's house that was on fire. Fire crews say that Hill and Stephens feared their neighbors and small child were stuck inside the home.

As the two searched the home, crews say that a "flashover" trapped Hill in the living room and forced Stephens to the porch floor. Authorities say Stephens was able to recover and re-enter the home to retrieve Hill.

Hill was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center and transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he remained in the Burn Unit until his death.

Hill is survived by his wife Sharen, 3-year-old son Kyle and 4-year-old daughter Grace.

On Tuesday morning, Hill was picked up from a funeral home in Norwood and escorted by a fire engine from the Whitley Fire Department to the Cincinnati Fire Department's headquarters at 430 Central Avenue.

Firefighters from the Greater Cincinnati area then honored Hill with a formal procession to send him home to Kentucky.
