SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Allyson Baldwin just turned ten years old, but instead of
asking for gifts, she asked for donations.
About a year ago, Baldwin was at St. Jude Children's
Hospital for an injured ankle.
While there, she said she wanted to do something for the
children spending a lot of time at the hospital. She asked the hospital for a
list of items it needed, like coloring books and crayons.
Instead of birthday presents, Baldwin asked all of her
friends to donate those items.
Michelle Baldwin, Allyson's mother, said her daughter is
inspiring other children to do the same.
"I think she empowers people every day. When she was telling
people in our neighborhood about this, her little sister said right away she
was going to donate her birthday party and a little girl down the street said
she wants to donate hers to the food shelter," Michelle said. "The more she
tells people what she did, I think other kids will catch on and want to do it
Allyson is hoping to collect enough items so that each child
in St. Jude's right now will get something.
