Park officials investigating trees cut across Monte Sano trail

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

State park officials are trying to determine who sawed down dozens of trees along a popular trail on Monte Sano. The downed trees have created an absolute mess for hikers, but the other concern is whether the land sits on private property or if this action was illegally performed on state property.

"At first it looked like maybe storm damage or something like a tornado went through there, but you could see that they were cut," said hiker Patrick Vitarius.

When Vitarius tried to go around a couple of cut trees on the Tollgate Trail, he quickly realized the damage was much more widespread. Our cameras captured at least 30 trees cut at various points. Some were splintered with parts still upright, others just laid across the trail. Vitarius said he quickly snapped some photos and reported it to Monte Sano Park officials.

"I really didn't know if it was some kind of infestation or vandalism or what," he said. Vitarius said he always thought the trail went straight through the park. He hikes the area weekly and he wants to know why somebody cut the trees down.

State park officials confirm they are investigating who cut the trees down and if the area sits inside the park or on private property. They said park employees will meet with a state supervisor, an engineer and another state official. The group will review surveys and property lines to determine on whose land the trees stand.

As of Tuesday, nothing was marked. Officials said once they determine where the damage exists, they will make their next move but cannot do anything until the property determination is made.
