Student charged after bringing gun to KCK middle school
KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
The Wyandotte County District Attorney filed charges Friday against a 13-year-old student who brought a gun into Turner Middle School Wednesday.
The district attorney's office said the girl was charged with one count of criminal use of a weapon for being under 18 and possessing a handgun. The charge is a class A misdemeanor. She made her first appearance in court Friday and was ordered to be held in juvenile detention until further proceedings.
On Wednesday, another student told school officials about the gun and the student was taken into police custody. The gun was confiscated as part of their investigation.
A representative for the school district said they didn't find ammunition on the student or in their belongings.
"Safety of students is the top priority of Turner USD 202. Specific information regarding the student or consequences cannot be disclosed in order to protect the privacy of the child. Turner USD 202 will ensure that consequences are issued in accordance with district policy," the school district said in a written statement.
Leroy Smith, who has a grandson in the school district, said he is glad no one was hurt but is still disappointed over the incident.
"This is tragic that a child is allowed to have that freedom in a home, to find a gun and bring it to school, and the parents are not aware of it. It's something a parent or grandparent, whatever, should be aware of, keeping kids protected. Not only their own, but the others, principal and teachers at the school," Smith said.
A student told KCTV5 the incident happened in the morning, but it was handled quickly and the day went on as scheduled with no need for a lockdown.
The representative said the student will also face disciplinary action in accordance with district policy.
Since the teen is under 14 years of age, the district attorney's office will not release her name.
The school is located at 1312 S 55th St. in Kansas City, KS.
