KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Downtown Kansas City has seen its fair share of changes over the years and this year will be no exception.

Municipal Auditorium recently underwent a $5 million renovation and will have a whole new look as they reopen their doors as the home court of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Roos basketball team.

"We thought it was a good time to come back downtown and embrace Kansas City," said Carla Wilson, the interim assistant director at UMKC.

This is only the third time the auditorium has been renovated in its almost 80-year history.

UMKC and the city of Kansas City partnered to make the renovations.

After playing only three games last year at Municipal Auditorium, UMKC's Roos knew changes would have to be made if they were ever to call it home again.

"It needed to be upgraded to what's going on in the times right now," Wilson said.

The newest improvements include new seating, a new sound system, more lighting, a new press row score table and two 47-foot-wide scoreboards. They are updates that only three other facilities in the country have made.

"I think the fan experience is going to be tremendous. The style of play with our new coach, the up-tempo game, is going to be exciting in itself, but when we get people in here it's going to be really beneficial for them," Wilson said.

And some local players are excited to play downtown.

"I've never played there before and I've been here my whole life in Kansas City so it's a great chance as they're rebuilding the stadium. We're happy to get to play there," said UMKC freshman Martez Harrison.

Fans will get their first look this Friday with a blackout of the arena. UMKC is urging fans to dress in black when they come to the game. The university hopes to get 5,000 fans downtown for the opening exhibition game.
