Woman waits for money return after fire

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Missouri woman who lost everything in a fire said the apartment managers have not refunded her rent and deposit as promise.

Tish Johnson described the Sept. 18 fire at the Fountains at Linden Woods apartment complex near East 97th Street and Lydia Avenue in Kansas City, MO, as frightening. Johnson, who is pregnant, was home with her 10-year-old son at the time, but thick smoke and fast-moving flames forced them onto the street.

"The first thing that came to my mind was to grab the car keys and the purse. Me and my son, we ran out and, by the time we ran out, the smoke was already coming up," she said.

Johnson lost everything in the fire, but she was able to rebuild her life and replace some of her belongings because she had rental insurance. What she doesn't have is her deposit and pro-rated September rent check that she said management at the Linden Woods complex promised her.

She said it was supposed to arrive within 30 days.

"That was Sept. 18. It's now Nov. 1 and I haven't gotten anything. I keep getting the runaround about the money," she said.

KCTV5's Dave Jordan spoke with a manager named Michelle who confirmed that she did promise Johnson's check would be refunded and that check was cut and sent from their corporate office in Overland Park, KS. No one answered at the corporate office nor was anyone there Friday evening.

Johnson said she's at her wit's end and is considering another option.

"My next option is to contact the attorney general's office and the Better Business Bureau and hopefully something will get done," she said.

The funds Johnson was promised total about $500, which may not sound like a lot of money. But Johnson said that money means a lot since she is an expectant mother who is now working to get back on her feet.

The manager at the Fountains at Linden Woods apartment said she'll look into what happened to the check and may even recommend they stop payment on it and re-issue another one.
