Bill Cosby gives speech at Tuskegee University

TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) -

Well-known comedian and actor Dr. Bill Cosby was the Homecoming headliner at Tuskegee University over the weekend.

Cosby, who is known for his support of historically black colleges and universities, spoke Sunday during the Golden Tigers' homecoming convocation.

Education and the appreciation for learning were the key points of his message.

"College is not founded on football helmets, basketball and baseball cleats," Cosby said during his speech.

Cosby not only focused on academics but also stressed teaching respect to young people.

"Here on this campus, faculty, civil rights leaders, respect them," Cosby said.

After the convocation, Cosby was the headliner for a luncheon fundraiser for Tuskegee University.

For a $5,000 donation, participants were able to be a part of a "conversation with Cosby" and have their picture taken with him. The money went to benefit Tuskegee's "Programmed for Excellence" campaign.

Tuskegee hopes to raise $250 million over the next 5 years for the university's enhancements.
