Car with teens nearly hit Olathe students, smash into parked cars

Posted: Updated:

A car with a teen driver and passenger nearly hit students as they were leaving an Olathe elementary school and wound up smashing into parked vehicles.

The vehicle's tires were blown out when the car hit a curb near a middle school.

The teen driver apparently nearly struck a group of children and parents outside Regency Place Elementary School, 13250 S. Greenwood in Olathe. The driver then plowed into several parked cars near California Middle School.

A lockdown was ordered at the elementary and nearby schools as armed officers searched for the driver.

This occurred about 3:35 p.m. Dismissal is 3:40 p.m. at the elementary school, so those left at the school were told to stay in place. The lockdown was lifted after an hour.

Parents helped tackle the passenger, who tried to flee the scene. That person is now in police custody. Police searched the area for the driver, but have yet to find that person.

The two in the vehicle are suspected of being involved in a shoplifting incident at the Walmart off 135th Street.

No one was injured.
