MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The cause of death for Brent Springford, Jr., an Alabama Department of Corrections inmate who was serving a life sentence for the brutal beating and stabbing deaths of his parents on Thanksgiving Day 2004, is now known.

It was originally thought that Springford, who was just 36-years-old, died of natural causes, but an autopsy was ordered. The Jefferson County Coroner's office now confirms Springford died from suicide after he ingested a toxic amount of Tylenol.

Springford was found unresponsive in his cell on Monday, October 7. He was transported from the Donaldson infirmary to Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham where he died the following day.

The only surviving immediate member of the Springford family, Brent's sister Robin, has said she believes had she been in her parents' Montgomery home at the time of the attacks, she too would have been killed.
