Montgomery city council meeting gets heated over hookah bar's liquor license request

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

There were fireworks Tuesday night at the Montgomery City Council meeting.

It was all over a Montgomery hookah bar's request for a liquor license.

Fuego Hookah Bar is located on the Atlanta Highway. Hookah is flavored tobacco. About a hundred people showed up to the public hearing to fight it. Many of them live in the nearby Sommerset neighborhood.

In the end, the liquor license was denied, but the business owner says the fight isn't over.

It was quite the scene as the owner got emotional at the city council meeting. The atmosphere was tense and police had to escort the owner and manager of the lounge out of the building.

Things started going down hill when some residents started speaking against the lounge's liquor license application.

Some resident complained of loud noise from the lounge and said adding liquor would only create more problems.

The owner of the lounge, Tohid Rahmani, said the residents are being racist.

"We have evidence showing that Somerset does not want blacks, lower class people in the area. I want Somerset to know there will be a fight and this is not the end," Rahmani said.

One resident denied the claims.

"He made all this racial and it has nothing to do with race," Gene Bryan said. "The whole petition was speaking more of income levels. I don't interpret that as black or white or anything."

The city council also took up an ordinance to tow unlicensed drivers involved in accidents and again postponed taking any action on it.
