Tuesday's rain couldn't dampen the excitement at the kick-off for Kansas City's new soccer village. The new multi-million dollar facility in Swope Park is already getting ready to host its first event.

The Big 12 Women's Soccer Tournament gets underway Wednesday, but Tuesday officials offered a first look at the field the ladies will be playing on.

The field's completion and the tournament is phase one of the $13.4 million project that will ultimately be the Swope Park Soccer Village. It will have nine fields for young soccer players to practice and compete on.

The Big 12 has a strong tie to Kansas City, particularly with the conference basketball tournament held in town and that played a part in awarding the city the tournament. The other big factor in getting the tournament was Sporting KC's involvement.

"They said, ‘we have a number of different alternatives for you and one of them is building a field that you can play your tournament on' and we listened and they delivered and it's absolutely spectacular," said Bob Bowlsby, the Big 12 commissioner.

"I think having the Big 12 here is a big step and it will allow the sports commission to bid on a lot of other tournaments down here and I think we'll have a great opportunity to get many of them in the future," said Rob Heineman, the CEO of Sporting Club.

The Big 12 Women's Soccer Tournament starts Wednesday and will roll on for the next six days. As part of the deal with the city, the Big 12 will not only hold the tournament in Kansas City this year, but next year as well.
