The Montgomery Botanical Garden at Oak Park held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning. On hand were city leaders including Mayor Todd Strange, Montgomery School Board President Eleanor Dawkins, Tom McLemore, Nash Cooley and Ethel Boykin-Dozier.

The donations from Capital City Master Gardeners and Junior Thespian Literary Club provided the seed monies to begin the work of the Montgomery's Botanical Garden at Oak Park. The donors were recognized at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The vision is to make the gardens a destination location for the city, complete with colorful plants, trees, and flowers.  The long term plan includes a museum and educational offerings for children.  The Botanical Gardens will be paid for and kept up by volunteers from the Friends of the Montgomery Botanical Gardens Club.  The city will only provide the land inside Oak Park.

The Gardens will reflect the important history of Montgomery and provide a beautiful and educational green space while incorporating the work of artists from around the State of Alabama.

The Montgomery Botanical Garden will achieve this by focusing on six key concepts that underscore a new role for Oak Park:

• A destination-location for those traveling through Montgomery and for our citizenry

• A natural science-based educational experience

• A role model for environmentally-sound, sustainable horticultural practices

• An important and profitable venue for events and functions

• A plant collections-based living museum

• A museum of Alabama outdoor art.

Through fundraising, advocacy and volunteerism, Montgomery Botanical Garden at Oak Park will restore, preserve and further develop Oak Park as a resource for economic development, community enjoyment and education.  The Montgomery Botanical Garden at Oak Park will promote knowledge and appreciation of plants, the environment, history and art through educational offerings.
