BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has offered to raise money to help a financially troubled cemetery in Birmingham.

Bentley sent a letter Thursday to the trustee overseeing George Washington Carver Memorial Gardens. He offered to raise money to repair the cemetery's fence and gates.

He also asked that visitors be allowed to visit the graves of their loved ones.

Al.com (http://bit.ly/17ImgFV ) reports that the letter came after Bentley met with clergy, residents and lawmakers from Jefferson County.

The cemetery has sought bankruptcy protection.
