MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Vietnam Veterans of America held its annual ceremony Monday to properly dispose of old and worn American flags. The flags are disposed of with respect and honor through a burning process.

The event took place in Montgomery at Greenwood Cemetery's VVA Memorial Gardens. The service was held in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Brickyard for its fallen brothers in arms.

The veterans held a short program to honor veterans before commencing the process of properly burning the flags. The program included a prayer, a moment of silence for fallen veterans and the playing of Taps.

The Boy and Girls Scouts of America assisted in the ceremony, as did the Montgomery Catholic Middle School Marching Band as it performed the National Anthem.

More than 100 flags were properly disposed of during the ceremony.

"The flag should never touch the ground, and it should always be disposed of in an honorable manner. You should never throw it in the trash can or burn it yourself," said VVA spokesman Chuck Manikas. "It should be burned in a memorial such as this by an organization such as this that shows due respect to the flag."

According to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, this is the process for proper disposal of an unserviceable American flag goes as follows:

1. The flag should be folded in its customary manner.

2. It is important that the fire be fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag.

3. Place the flag on the fire.

4. The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.

5. After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried.

6. Make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.
