KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A man suffered second- and third-degree burns to his arms, back, face and chest in an apartment fire.

Other residents helped rescue him. The fire has displaced 19 adults and 11 children. The area chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire.

The fire was reported about 1:30 p.m. Monday near Rosedale Park Drive and Mission Road.

When crews first arrived on the scene, firefighters reported seeing fire billowing from the complex.

KCK Fire Department Deputy Chief Craig Duke said firefighters found the injured man at the front door to the apartment building. He was transported to an area hospital.

Duke said the fire started in a second floor apartment and extended to the third floor. The cause is under investigation.

Sherry Ponce said she was home when she heard a bang. When she went into the hallway to investigate, she heard a cry for help and saw smoke coming from underneath the man's door.

"I couldn't get it open and another gentleman neighbor came and kicked the door open for us. When he did, the black smoke rolled into our faces," she recalled. "We bent over and tried to get him and the flames started coming out."

The man crawled out the door and they then helped partially carry him to safety.

Chris Driggs was the man who kicked in the door.

"He was lying on the floor near the stairs," he said. "I helped him get up. I grabbed his hand and led him out of it, but he was covered in smoke. He was breathing out smoke."

Ponce said she has lost everything and doesn't know what her future will bring.

"All of our stuff that we worked for is now gone. The gentleman is laying in the hospital bed and we've got babies," she said. "We've got so many babies to this apartment complex. And it's more for the babies than for us adults."
