Spartanburg trick-or-treater killed while saving brother's life

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The family of a teenager killed Halloween night said their loved one saved her brother's life before she died.

The Spartanburg County coroner said Erica Fields, 17, was killed when a car hit her along Fernwood Drive on Oct. 31. The coroner said Fields was trick-or-treating with a group that included her little brother.

Erica's mother, Kalani Fields, said her son told her that his sister pulled him to safety as a car came toward them.

"She was always someone who put her family before herself," Fields said.

Fields said her son was unharmed, but her daughter was hit and later died at the hospital. 

"What he remembers last was her reaching out her hand to him saying 'Dre, we need to get across the street,'" Fields said.

Erica was a junior at Spartanburg High School and planned to enlist in the Army after graduating. 

"She knew where she was going in life, and you were either coming with her or you were going to watch her,"  Fields said.

Because of her daughter's strong faith and her own, Fields said she has been able to forgive the driver that hit her teenager.

Spartanburg Public Safety said while the investigation into the accident isn't complete, they don't expect charges to be filed against the driver in this case.
