SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police told CBS 3 that they are investigating a shooting that happened around 8 a.m. this morning in the city's South End.

Lt. Robert Moynihan said the incident happened near the intersection of Main and Loring streets.

The male victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center and went in for surgery.  Police confirmed on Sunday evening that he is in stable condition and expected to survive.

CBS 3 media partner Mass Live and The Republican reported the victim was disabled and in a wheelchair, which was overturned at the scene.

Both Springfield police and State Police troopers were searching for a suspect, who they believe fled on foot down Loring Street and turned north on East Columbus Avenue.
