SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

Authorities are investigating a homicide that happened Saturday in Colbert County.

Police responded around 10:30 p.m. to a home on 18th Court in Sheffield.

Authorities said Thomas Grant Campbell, 27, of Muscle Shoals, and James Christopher Martin got into an altercation at the home. According to witness statements, Campbell then held a woman at knife point in front of two children. One of the children asked Campbell to let their mother go and when he did, that's when witnesses said Martin shot him.

Campbell was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"We haven't had this proved yet, but we've been told one of the children actually begged for its mother's life, and then just a few seconds later a person has been shot in front of her. You know that's something you're not ever going to forget. It's going to stay with you forever. That's tragic in itself, not to mention the death of this young man. Nothing good is going to come from this at all," said Police Chief Greg Ray.

According to Facebook, Grant Campbell served as a Marine for five years. His service included three deployments including Iraq, Afghanistan and the coast of Libya.

Police said the investigation is ongoing, and they are relying heavily on the evidence in this case to tell the victim's side of the story.

"Hopefully we're going to do that through some forensic evidence. We do have some more people we still have to talk to. Another sad thing about this is these two families were well-acquainted with each other, they were friends," said Chief Ray.

Martin is in custody for questioning and has not been formally charged.
