Nationally ranked coach resigns after allegations of biting a player

MADDEN, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Leake county coach, famous for his accomplishments on the court, stepped down amid allegations of attacking a player.

After 38 years of coaching girls basketball at Leake Academy the spotlight is now on Doyle Wolverton for all the wrong reasons.

A teenage girl accuses him of biting her in front of her teammates.

In 2011 Wolverton was nationally ranked as the third winningest girl's basketball coach in the nation. Two years later he has left the school in disgrace after allegations that he angrily attacked a young player during a game.

"I've been informed today that Coach Wolverton has resigned from the school," said Leake County Sheriff Greg Waggoner.

Leake County Sheriff Greg Waggoner said the violent incident happened during an away game in Marion county on November 12th.  A department incident report identified Coach Wolverton as the person named in the simple assault complaint.

The senior Rebelettes basketball player was taken by her parents to the Leake County E. R. after the game where hospital officials contacted authorities.

The victim told investigators that during a timeout while in a huddle Wolverton grabbed her by the shirt and drew her close to him and bit her face.

"She'd made a bad play and he was angry with her...I saw photographs of it. It was visible marks on her right cheek, and there had been some small amount of bleeding," added Sheriff Waggoner.

WLBT featured the Union native as the face of Leake Academy Basketball charting his 1,153 wins in 2011.

He had accumulated 24 district titles, 13 state titles and five state overall championships.

The sheriff said while an incident report was made no charges were filed.

When asked if the department investigated any other any claims against Wolverton the sheriff answered, "No none have come to this office."

But there are rumors of other violence by Wolverton against other players.

When contacted Monday the juvenile player's father said he would rather not comment but added that "He (Coach Wolverton) resigned today".

Leake County Headmaster Jerry Crowe did not return our calls for comment.
