MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The YMCA of Montgomery partnered with the Optimist Club of the Capital City as a part of Optimist International Youth Appreciation Week Wednesday for Youth in City Government Day.

Students grades 7 through 12 from across the city elect in advance a youth mayor and 8 city councilmen who preside over the day. The students prepare ordinances and the day is filled with guest speakers including Todd Strange and Montgomery city councilmen.

The program seeks to increase high school students' knowledge of their local government and the role it plays in the daily lives of a citizen.

The students will be at City Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., breaking for lunch at the Capital City Club from noon to 1:00 p.m.
