BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Sports Illustrated is taking up a question many Alabama fans have been wondering for a while: "Should AJ McCarron be considered one of the best football players ever?"

McCarron is featured on the cover of this week's issue of SI in a piece written by the sports magazine's executive editor L. Jon Wertheim titled "King CRIMSON."

In part of the article published on the SI.com website, Wertheim points out that McCarron's numbers aren't as impressive when compared to Heisman hopefuls such as Johnny Manziel or Marcus Mariota.

"By conventional metrics, McCarron is not going to elevate eyebrows. He will not often throw for 300 yards, the way, say, Manziel, Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater will. He's not a dual threat," Wertheim states.

However, Wertheim says McCarron is "on the short list of the most successful players in the history of college football" and points to this statistic to back up his claim:

"He has as many national championships as he does defeats."

On Wednesday, McCarron tweeted a photo of the SI cover and thanked his teammates for putting him there.

"I just want to say THANK YOU to my teammates for helping me make this cover! Wouldn't be anything W/O you. #muchlove"

McCarron is one win away from breaking Jay Barker's record of 35 wins as an Alabama quarterback. He'll have the chance to get his 36th career win Saturday when Tuscaloosa hosts Chatanooga in the last home game of McCarron's final season.

On Nov. 30, the Crimson Tide will take on the Auburn Tigers in their last game of the regular season in what's expected to be an epic battle between two top-10 teams for the SEC West Title.

The winner of the Iron Bowl will then go on to play in the SEC Championship game for the chance to be the next BCS National Champion.
