TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A man's body was found floating in the Santa Cruz River this morning, near St. Mary's and Riverside. Firefighters said two people called 911 just after 11 a.m. to report the body.

The Tucson Police Department has now taken over the investigation. Homicide detectives have been working in this rain, trying to figure out what caused this man's death.

Firefighters had to send out the swift water rescue team.

Their first priority was safety. With slippery banks and rain still falling, the swift water rescue team used ropes to try to get to the body and bring up to to dry ground. The weather proved to be a challenge for rescue crews.

"It's cold outside, the water is cold," said TFD Capt. Barrett Baker. "There is debris in the water. It's a bad situation. This is a reminder that this can happen twelve months out of the year. Washes are not a good spot to be when you have rain."

Tucson Police said the man's cause of death is unknown at this time. Firefighters said he appears to have been in the water for a while.
