Man to police: I want to hurt children

FAIRFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

Fairfield police have arrested a man they said came to them pleading for help because he had been having thoughts of harming children at a local school, and wanted someone to intervene before he carried out his plan.

Fairfield police released the chilling information on Tuesday.

According to officials the man, identified as Joseph Russo, 44, of Fairfield, called them just before midnight on Oct. 27 asking for assistance. Police went to his location and said he was cooperative, but appeared to be distraught and provided disturbing details of his plan to harm students at Sherman Elementary School.

Police said Russo told them he had been thinking of the plan for years, and said it was his intent to carry out the plan. He told them he didn't want to hurt anyone, and called police for immediate help regarding his thoughts.

Based on a police investigation, they determined Russo was a "significant and potential danger to others," and Russo was brought to a local hospital for an evaluation.

Fairfield police and members of the school district worked together to notify personnel of the threat and that the man was being evaluated.

Police said Russo remained in protective custody during a longer investigation and posed no threat to the public.

Based on the investigation and interview of Russo, it was determined that Russo had made similar threats previously that he wanted to take students hostage to traumatize them.

Police said it was determined that sufficient probable cause existed to believe Russo committed the crimes of first-degree threatening and threatening an act of terrorism.

Russo, who was previously arrested in Delaware for arson and violation of probation, was released from the medical facility on Tuesday morning and was taken into police custody.

Russo, who appeared in a wheelchair, was arraigned at Fairfield Superior Court on Tuesday. He is being held on $100,000 bond
