Ft. Payne faces problem of hog-wild proportions

FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) -

Hogs have gone wild in the DeKalb County town of Fort Payne. Residents are complaining to City Hall about yards damaged from wild hogs that have been seen in the area, so city officials are trying to do something about it.

The hogs are usually just a nuisance for deer hunters, but they have found their way into the city limits. Public works officials are setting traps in the hopes of getting them, but they breed at such a fast rate that officials are in for a challenge.

One field in the city looks like the site of a mortar assault; the hogs' snouts can be quite destructive in their hunt for food. Residents are reporting similar destruction to their lawns.

City crews have set up about ten traps along areas such as Hixon Road. So far, just over 20 hogs have been captured. While that sounds good, the problem is still quite large, according to Public Works Director Tim Williams.

"We thought we were making a dent in it, but from the looks of the vandalism… we probably haven't put a dent in them yet. They think there's around 300 in the area, so we have still got a ways to go," Williams said.

Meanwhile, the people in charge of trapping the hogs are enjoying the fruits of their labor and brushing up on their culinary skills at the same time. Public Works employees were able to have a filling pre-Thanksgiving lunch with one of the hogs they caught Wednesday.

"We're looking forward to getting some more so we can have more lunches," said Williams.

Officials said they are considering working with conservation officials to see if residents would be allowed to bow-hunt the animals, because it is illegal to fire weapons in the city limits.
