AVONDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Police have identified a body discovered in an Avondale canal Thursday afternoon.

The victim is 19-year-old Payton Crane, of Avondale. Payton had no apparent signs of trauma and was found face down, said Avondale police Sgt. Brandon Busse.

"We're at a complete loss here, and that's probably what we'd like to reach out to people the most on. We do believe somebody knows something, and as a parent, you really want to know what happened to your child," said Cash Eagan, Crane's stepfather.

People with any information information on the whereabouts of Crane in the days before Thanksgiving are urged to contact the Avondale Police Department at 623-333-7380 or they can contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS if they want to remain anonymous.

CBS 5 News caught up with an Avondale resident, Jose Angulo, who had hopped onto his back wall to get a glimpse of Holy Cross Cemetery near 103rd Avenue and Thomas Road.

"My dad is buried in the cemetery right here. [He was buried] one week ago," said Angulo.

Instead, he spotted quite the crime scene surrounding the canal that flows through the area.

"I just saw the ambulance and I came to take a look at it, and right now it's a dead body in the canal," said Angulo.

Avondale police say a father and son who were riding their ATV near the canal spotted the body at about 9:30 a.m.

There are few answers to what happened to the person in the canal.

"It could be suicide," Busse said. "It could be homicide. It could be lots of different things," he said, making sure to point out the area is still considered a crime scene.

Busse said it's an unfortunate call, but detectives and police officers are used to dealing with it.

"It's obviously sad. You don't want to be working some type of incident like this on Thanksgiving. You don't know what that person is going through," he said.

Busse does not believe that detectives will be able to determine what happened to the person in the canal until an autopsy is performed. That could take a few weeks.
