Fast and Furious star Paul Walker is dead at 40

It has been confirmed that Paul Walker, the star of Fast and Furious, is dead at the age of 40.

Paul's representatives released the following statement on Facebook after several news outlets reported the actor's demise.

"It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. - #TeamPW"

The Fast and the Furious is a series of six action films which center on illegal street racing and heists.

The film series, which was produced by Universal Studios, hit the big screen in 2001.  With the original movie followed by five sequels, two short films that tie into the series and a related video game series, it's made more than $2 billion worldwide and is considered Universal Studios' biggest franchise of all time.
