PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police shot and critically wounded a 44-year-old man during an hours-long standoff Sunday.

Earlier, the suspect, sought in connection with an early-morning aggravated assault, opened fire on a Phoenix police officer outside a home in south Phoenix.

Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes said officers found and arrested Darren Haywood in a doghouse in a backyard near 47th Avenue and Baseline Road.

Residents in the area were evacuated while police negotiated with the man to surrender. Three officers opened fire when the suspect emerged and pointed a gun at them, police said.

Holmes said Haywood tried to enter the home through a back door, but the woman at the house went to the door and Haywood crawled into the doghouse. The homeowner then called 911.

Earlier, a caller notified police of an aggravated assault in the area of 8500 S. 47th Ln. about 8 a.m. Sunday. Officers discovered a man had been at that home with his wife or girlfriend and other friends and an argument broke out between the suspect and his girlfriend.

"At some time during the argument, another man stepped in and the suspect pulled out a weapon and struck the victim several times," Homes said.

The victim, who was pistol-whipped, is expected to be OK, Holmes added.

The suspect fled the area. A few hours a later, Phoenix Police Officer Aadil Muhammad, who went to the home and spotted a man fitting the description of the gunman walking near 47th Avenue and Baseline Road, Holmes said.

Muhammad, who knew the suspect was armed with a weapon, confronted the man who by this time was in front of a home, Holmes said.

The suspect kept his hands hidden, Holmes said.

"The officer drew his own service weapon," Holmes said. "At that point, the suspect turned around and fired a couple of rounds at our officer and then he fled."

Muhammad, 35, did not return fire but took cover and called for backup, Holmes said.

Haywood then went to the nearby house and would not surrender to officers. He repeatedly said he did not want to return to prison, Holmes said.

About 2:30 p.m., Haywood pointed his gun at Phoenix Police Officer Billy Clark, who along with two other officers, fired at Haywood, striking him in the head and arm.

Haywood was in extremely critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital on Monday morning, Holmes said.

Muhammad suffered minor scrapes to his knees, but no other officers were hurt, Holmes said.
