Tucson requests waiver from streetcar requirement

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

Tucson is asking the federal government to let it begin its new streetcar line before the full initial roster of cars will be available.

The city is asking for a waiver from the Federal Transit Administration on its requirement that the city operate six cars on the four-mile route between downtown and the University of Arizona campus while having two cars in reserve.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, the problem is that the city won't have eight cars operational by July 25 when it wants to begin service.

Four cars are being tested, but testing of four more cars expected to arrive from the manufacturer in May wouldn't be finished by July 25.

City officials want the system running a month before the university's fall semester starts.
