Dothan P.D. introduces new command vehicle

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

The Dothan Police Department is taking steps to make the city safer. The department now has a new, state-of-the-art command vehicle.

Officers are still putting the finishing touches on the command vehicle, but it's already been put to work to protect residents. It was used at the Peanut Festival and shopping areas for Black Friday and if anything disastrous were to happen like deadly tornadoes, or a hostage situation like in Midland City, it's ready to go.

"This is just one more thing the citizens should be proud of about their police department," said Dothan Police Chief Greg Benton.

The vehicle was originally a diabetes clinic, but with a little work, it's now ready for the department. Officers used every inch of space of the vehicle to make it as functional as possible.

On the outside is a work bench, a light for indicating when people can come inside and even a television so officials can see what is on the computers inside without taking a step in the door. In the vehicle there are four loaded work stations, radios, computers, television, a meeting room and every wall is a white board.

Typically a vehicle like this would start around $400,000. However, the police department bought the command vehicle for $50,000, put in $4,000 dollars worth of equipment and not a dime was tax payers money. Every cent came from seizure money.

"You need something like this at the scene to be able to communicate with other agencies. What makes it so great is you can do anything out of this vehicle that you can do from a command post that is a fixed structure," Benton said.

The old command post was a 1986 model and with a bad engine, it was difficult to get to locations. Officers say that's not the case with this one. Dothan PD still plans to add satellite service in case of emergencies when cell phone towers are not in service and a mast to be able to see what's going on outside.
